Sorrento is a town located by the south verge of the Gulf of Naples in Campania, Italy. It is a popular tourist destination with large crowds getting there every summer to enjoy its luxurious hotels and the beautiful beaches of the Amalfi Coast. It is especially famous for its oranges and lemons cultivation; the well-known Limoncello digestif is produced there.
The oldest ruins discovered in the city date back to the 7th century BC and are of Oscan origin. The area was later populated by Aeolian Greeks who came from the island of Lapara off the shore of Sicily. A temple dedicated to the Sirens operated in the city during its Greek era: the only one known to have operated in historic times throughout the Greek world.
It was one lazy morning when I was residing in Pompei, I decided to catch the Circumvesuviana rail train and take a short trip to Sorrento. I spent there a day walking exhaustively around its various neighborhoods and its purlieu. You’ll see in this album some photos I took on that day.
