Ischia is the largest one of the volcanic Phlegraean Islands: an archipelago in the Gulf of Naples, in Campania, Southern Italy. The island is very densely populated, maintaining a population of 60.000 permanent residents. In addition to them, large numbers of tourists flood the island all year round to enjoy its scenic beaches and the spas of its volcanic activity.
Ischia was inhabited since the bronze age and became an important trading outpost after Euboean Greeks arrived and settled there in the 8th century BC.
While being in Naples, one day, I and a friend took the ferry to the island for a day trip. We rented a motorbike and drove the whole circumference of the island, exploring its beautiful beaches, other picturesque spots, and climbing to its highest point: Mount Epomeo.
