On my way back to Mahebourg from a day trip to Bras d’Eau National Park, I stopped for a walk in Central Flacq. This is the largest town and administration center of the Flacq District in northeastern Mauritius.
Flacq is mostly renowned for its open-air market. But since that’s fully open on Wednesdays and Sundays—days which weren’t today—I skipped it altogether. I parked in the broad lot in front of Flacq Shopping Mall, and hungry as I was from my hike, I looked for a meal. That was the easy part. No shortage of nice Indian restaurants, like anywhere in Mauritius.
The hard part was satisfying my caffeine craving. As is usually the case in this country, there wasn’t a single coffee shop. A handful that appeared on Google Maps were either something altogether different or nonexistent. In the end, I found a plastic cup of coffee-flavored instant powder in a backyard restaurant.
Even though the Flacq Market was closed, the whole town wasn’t but a big market. Food, clothing, electronics, and a high concentration of golden jewelry shops lined the main street. The locals’ desire to buy the latter must also have in part caused the popping-up of exceptionally many casinos.
Besides shops and a flood of people—particularly students—I walked past the District Court. It was a picturesque old building, busy with police and relatives of defendants who might have committed crimes after blowing up their wages in the casinos.
Having walked enough to digest my curry, I returned to my bike and rode away.
