The route toward Nevado del Ruiz crosses high-altitude terrain in the Central Andes, leading into páramo landscapes characterized by open plains, frailejón plants, and dramatic skies. This volcanic region is part of Los Nevados National Natural Park and is known for its stark beauty and changing weather conditions.
We drove this road between Manizales and Murillo during our March 2026 trip. Along the way, we stopped several times, stepping out into the open landscape to take photos. The páramo stretched wide around us, and we paused often just to take in the scale before continuing.
