The Tatacoa Desert is a semi-arid region in Huila, characterized by eroded red and gray landscapes rather than true desert sands. It is divided into zones such as the Cusco labyrinth and Los Hoyos, each with distinct formations. The area is known for its stark terrain, open skies, and extreme daytime temperatures.
We set out before sunrise from Villavieja during our March 2026 trip. We walked through the Cusco labyrinth as the light changed across the formations, then later moved on to Los Hoyos. We spent the morning hiking between these areas before returning.
