Hidden among the forested slopes of Mount Dirfys in central Evia, Stropones Gorge offers one of the island’s most rewarding hiking experiences. Beginning in the mountain village of Stropones and ending at the iconic Chiliadou Beach on the Aegean coast, the route follows the crystal-clear waters of the Stroponiatis River through a landscape of plane trees, shaded pools, and dense woodland. Despite its proximity to some of Evia’s most popular destinations, the gorge remains surprisingly little known outside hiking circles.
The trail combines the cool atmosphere of a river gorge with the satisfaction of reaching the sea on foot. For much of the route, hikers walk beside the river, crossing it repeatedly as it winds through the valley beneath towering trees. The scenery changes gradually from lush riverside forest to cultivated countryside before finally emerging at the celebrated shores of Chiliadou Beach. Covering approximately 8.5–9 kilometres, the hike is suitable for most reasonably fit walkers and is especially enjoyable during the warmer months, when the river provides a welcome escape from the summer heat.

How to Get to Stropones
Stropones Gorge lies in central Evia, approximately 122 km from Athens and 45 km from Chalkida. The route is straightforward, following a fully paved road all the way to Stropones Village. While the road is generally in good condition, the final section becomes narrower, steeper, and more winding as it climbs up and down the mountains.

If travelling by public transport, the easiest option year-round is to take a bus to Steni, one of Evia’s most popular mountain villages. From there, Stropones is about 16 km away and can be reached by taxi. During the summer months, additional bus services often operate to Chiliadou Beach, particularly on weekends. These routes pass through Stropones, making it possible to get off in the village and begin the hike directly from there.
Stropones Village
Nestled between Mount Dirfys, the highest mountain on Evia, and the slopes of Xerovouni, Stropones is one of the largest mountain villages in the municipality of Dirfys-Messapia. Built at an elevation of 335 metres and surrounded by forests, streams, and fertile farmland, it serves as the main gateway to Stropones Gorge and the hiking trail leading to Chiliadou Beach.
The village has a long history and appears in administrative records as early as 1836. According to local tradition, the village’s unusual name derives from the Greek word trýpa (“hole” or “hiding place”), reflecting the secluded nature of the surrounding landscape, whose dense forests and rugged terrain once provided shelter for shepherds and residents during the Ottoman period. Today, Stropones remains a quiet rural community of around 350 permanent residents, known for its spring water, chestnuts, cherries, walnuts, livestock products, and vegetable cultivation.
At the heart of the village stands the Church of the Holy Trinity, built on the site of a former Byzantine monastery that was reportedly destroyed by pirates during the 14th century. The church’s carved wooden iconostasis dates to 1847.
Hiking Stropones Gorge
The hike through Stropones Gorge begins in the centre of Stropones Village, near the Church of the Holy Trinity, where you will find parking space. From there, a stone-paved path descends to the 📍trailhead towards the banks of the Stroponiatis River, known in antiquity as the Dirfossos, meaning “the river that springs from Dirfys”. For much of the route, the trail follows the river through a deeply shaded valley lined with towering plane trees, creating one of the coolest and most pleasant hiking environments in Evia.
The first section of the hike runs alongside the crystal-clear waters of the river, which occasionally form small natural pools beneath the trees. Although the trail is considered relatively easy and suitable for most hikers, it crosses the river numerous times as the path alternates between its two banks. During the summer months, water levels are usually lower, making these crossings straightforward and adding to the adventure rather than the difficulty.
The gorge is also rich in wildlife. Birdsong accompanies hikers throughout much of the route, while reptiles, amphibians, and small mammals can occasionally be spotted among the rocks, riverbanks, and dense vegetation. Last time I was there, a curious weasel appeared beside the trail and spent several minutes running around us, playing, and cautiously investigating its unexpected visitors before disappearing back into the forest.
After approximately two and a half hours of walking through the gorge, the landscape begins to change. The route leaves the river behind and continues along a rural track shaded by cherry, walnut, and plane trees. From here, a final stretch of around three kilometres leads towards the coast, where the trail eventually emerges above the shores of Chiliadou Beach.
The complete route is approximately 8.5–9 kilometres long and typically takes between three and five hours to complete, including breaks. Combining riverside scenery, dense forest, mountain landscapes, and a finish at one of Evia’s most famous beaches, it is widely regarded as one of the island’s finest hiking experiences.
Chiliadou Beach
After emerging from the gorge, hikers are rewarded with the sight of Chiliadou Beach, one of Evia’s most famous stretches of coastline. Framed by steep green slopes and facing the open Aegean Sea, the beach is known for its clear waters, pebbled shore, and wild setting. Free camping has long been popular here, while a handful of lodges operate in the area during the summer months.
