Rumiñahui Volcano is an extinct volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, located within Cotopaxi National Park beside the imposing cone of Cotopaxi Volcano. Although less famous than its neighboring peak, Rumiñahui is a rewarding hiking destination, with steep trails climbing from the high-altitude páramo to rocky ridges overlooking the surrounding volcanoes. The ascent offers expansive views across the national park, including Laguna de Limpiopungo and the open grasslands below.
We went on a day trek to Rumiñahui while staying in Machachi, starting from Laguna de Limpiopungo. We climbed steadily and reached just a few metres below the summit before a strong hailstorm forced us to turn back. The photographs document the hike from the lakeshore through the high mountain landscape, ending with the dramatic change in weather that brought the day to an early close.
