The Rumichaca Border crossing connects Colombia and Ecuador across a narrow Andean valley and serves as the principal land border between the two countries. The bridge and surrounding checkpoint area see constant movement from buses, freight traffic, traders, and travelers moving in both directions through the mountains. Despite its practical function, the surrounding landscape still reflects the highland scenery characteristic of the region.
We crossed the Rumichaca Border in April 2026 after spending three months traveling through Colombia. Before continuing into Ecuador, I took a few photographs around the crossing area and nearby viewpoints. The moment felt transitional, with traffic, travelers, and border formalities replacing the slower rhythm we had become used to during the journey.
