We started our 2025 Brazil trip landing in Rio de Janeiro. After a few days of initial acquaintance with this majestic city, and before returning a month later to experience its legendary Carnival, we decided to spend the intervening time exploring the coast of Rio State. Our first destination was the lesser-known town of Rio das Ostras.

Rio das Ostras lies 168 km east along the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Numerous buses run daily from Rio de Janeiro to Rio das Ostras, all departing from the city’s main bus terminal located here. We took a morning bus with the 1001 operator, which stopped in Rio das Ostras en route to Macaé. We booked the tickets on this site, which was the only one we found among many that didn’t require a CPF. The trip cost 120 reais per person and lasted about 2.5 hours.
Another great option we often used for short trips in Brazil is finding a shared car ride on BlaBlaCar.
We were dropped off in the town center. After a coffee, we checked into our comfy and budget-friendly accommodation, which would be our base for the next two weeks we spent exploring the area.
