Three weeks had passed in the paradisal little beach village of Praia do Rosa. Now, with just three days left on our three-month Brazilian visa, it was time to clear off. Before crossing into Uruguay, we decided to spend those final days getting a glimpse of Porto Alegre.
Several buses depart daily from Imbituba, the region’s main town and transport hub, located 20 km south of Praia do Rosa. We checked the routes online here. Ticket prices ranged from €11 to €24. We could have taken a night bus—as we usually do for longer trips, both to sleep through the distance and save on a night of accommodation—but this time, we opted for an early departure at 8 am.
Since we had to leave our accommodation at dawn, and there weren’t many Ubers around, we asked our host to arrange a taxi for us in case we couldn’t find a ride that early. The driver was punctual and friendly. If you’re looking for a taxi in Praia do Rosa, his WhatsApp number is +55 47 98464-1714. It took 30 minutes to reach Imbituba.
The small bus terminal in Imbituba (location) was completely deserted when we arrived about an hour before departure. The owner of the single canteen eventually showed up to make us some coffee and share his WiFi password for a fee. The bus, likely coming from São Paulo, arrived with a slight delay. We boarded with just a handful of other passengers and headed south.
Accounting for a lunch break at a road station, it took six and a half hours to reach Porto Alegre. And then another half hour to walk from the terminal to the center. We lodged in Nick Hostel, a relaxed and friendly place in Porto Alegre’s lively Cidade Baixa neighborhood. It has both dorms and private rooms, all clean and comfortable. The location is perfect—just a short walk from bars, restaurants, and Redenção Park, making it a great base for exploring the city.
