Potami Beach, Karystos: A Sandy Beach on South Evia

Potami Beach (meaning river beach) is one of the best-known beaches in the Karystia region of South Evia. Located on the exposed Aegean coast below the village of Platanistos and its cooling waterfall, it forms a long arc of sand stretching for roughly 800–1,000 meters and reaching up to 60 meters in width. The beach takes its name from the stream that flows down from the mountains through Platanistos before reaching the sea. With its open setting, large scale, and views across the Aegean toward Andros, it feels far removed from the more sheltered beaches around Karystos.

Although it lies in a remote corner of the island, Potami is surprisingly accessible. The beach is about 31 km from Karystos, but the winding mountain road means the drive takes close to an hour. From Athens, the fastest route is usually via the ferry from Rafina to Marmari, making the journey possible in around three hours. The route passes through the interior of southern Evia and offers occasional views toward the Karystos Gulf, the Kafireas Strait, and Andros.

Access

From Karystos, follow the road toward Platanistos via Aetos. Shortly after passing through Platanistos, signs direct visitors onto a short dirt road leading to the coast. The final approach is straightforward for ordinary vehicles in normal conditions. Parking is available near the beach.

What to Expect

Potami is largely sandy, although some sections contain pebbles. The seabed is shallow near the shore before dropping off more quickly farther out. The beach faces directly toward the Aegean and the Kafireas Strait (Cavo Doro), one of the windiest sea passages in Greece. As a result, conditions can vary dramatically. On calm days the sea is inviting and clear, while strong winds can generate large waves.

A distinctive feature of the area is the stream that reaches the sea here. Near its mouth, a small grove of plane trees creates a rare patch of shade on this otherwise open coastline. During summer, the area around the trees often attracts campers. Behind the beach, low dunes and the fertile valley formed by the stream add variety to the landscape, while cliffs mark both ends of the bay.

Potami remains mostly unorganized. A few tavernas operate nearby, and there is limited accommodation in the area, but the beach retains a natural character that has largely escaped large-scale tourism.

Where to Stay

Most visitors base themselves in Karystos, which offers by far the widest choice of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, and services in South Evia. If you want to stay right at the beach, however, Despoina Rooms is the main accommodation option in Potami. Located just steps from the sand, it offers simple rooms with sea views, kitchenettes, air conditioning, and access to an on-site restaurant. Potami Beach has a handful of simple dining options within walking distance of the sand. The most established is To Aigaio, a traditional seaside taverna serving fresh fish, seafood, grilled meats, and local dishes with views across the beach and the Aegean.
