Pichincha Volcano rises on the western side of Quito, forming one of the capital’s most dramatic natural backdrops. Its best-known summits include Rucu Pichincha, a popular hiking objective reached from the upper station of the TelefériQo cable car. The route climbs through high Andean páramo above the city, offering wide views over Quito when the weather allows, while the summit area reaches nearly 4,700 meters.
During our time in Quito, we went for a day trek on Pichincha Volcano. We took the cable car up to the station, then hiked to the peak of Rucu Pichincha and returned the same way. The photographs document the trip step by step, from the start above the city to the higher slopes and the walk back.
