A collection of pictures I took in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Browse hundreds of more photo albums from my trips around the world using the submenu above or the Photo Albums Map at the bottom of the page.
Samarkand, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia, is a vibrant testament to Uzbekistan’s rich history. Located along the ancient Silk Road, it has been a crossroad of cultures for over 2,500 years. The city’s most iconic feature is the Registan, a square flanked by three grand madrasahs with intricate tilework, domes, and towering minarets. Samarkand is also home to the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, a maze of mausoleums adorned with stunning blue tiles, and the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, once one of the largest in the Islamic world. The city blends its Persian, Mongol, and Timurid heritage with modern Uzbek culture, making it a cultural and architectural gem.
