A collection of pictures I took in Karaganda, Kazakhstan. Browse hundreds of more photo albums from my trips around the world using the submenu above or the Photo Albums Map at the bottom of the page.
Karaganda, a city in central Kazakhstan, has a history deeply tied to coal mining, which was the driving force behind its rapid growth during the Soviet period. Known for its industrial character, Karaganda also carries a poignant historical significance as the site of several Gulag labor camps, where political prisoners were sent during Stalin’s reign. The city today has transformed into a regional center for education, culture, and science. Visitors can explore the city’s Soviet-era architecture, memorial parks, and the KarLag Museum, which tells the story of the forced labor camps. Karaganda’s surrounding steppes and open spaces reflect the vastness of Kazakhstan’s interior.
