Situated in southern Greece, the Isthmus of Corinth is a narrow land strip that connects the Peloponnese peninsula to the mainland. The isthmus, measuring about 6.3 kilometers in width, is flanked by the Gulf of Corinth to the northwest and the Saronic Gulf to the southeast. Historically significant, it served as a strategic transportation corridor, prompting the construction of the Corinth Canal in the late 19th century. Today, the isthmus provides a unique geographical spectacle as you stand between two seas. The Corinth Canal, an engineering marvel, carves through the isthmus, allowing maritime passage between the Aegean and Ionian Seas. You can witness this feat of human ingenuity from observation points along its edges, providing a captivating perspective on Greece’s maritime landscape.
