Balkhash is a town in southeastern Kazakhstan, located on the northern shore of Lake Balkhash, one of the largest lakes in Central Asia. What makes Lake Balkhash unique is its divided nature—half of the lake consists of fresh water, while the other half is saline, separated by a narrow strait. The town itself has a strong industrial history, centered around copper mining and metallurgy, which dates back to the Soviet era. Though less touristic, Balkhash’s proximity to the lake makes it a destination for those interested in fishing, boating, or simply experiencing the vast and unique landscape of this part of Kazakhstan.
