The twin beaches of Mourteri and Agios Merkourios are separated by a few bluffs and are commonly referred to collectively as Mourteri. With a total length nearing 5 km, Mourteri is one of the longest beaches in Evia. Thanks to its vast stretch and limited development, it promises quiet, private holidays for lovers of peace and solitude.

Mourteri Beach is located in central-eastern Evia, below the villages of Oxilithos and Oktonia. The small seaside village of Mourteri is 23 km from Kymi, 75 km from Chalkida, and 152 km from Athens via the bridge (the distance is shorter via the Oropos-Eretria ferry).

Aside from its massive length, Mourteri also boasts an average width of 40 meters, covered in small pebbles and coarse sand. The seabed is rocky. As is typical along Evia’s eastern coast, the water is crystal-clear and deep. Shade is virtually nonexistent. During the season, a few beach bars set up umbrellas and loungers, but generally, a personal umbrella is essential.

The beach faces northeast. And because it isn’t enclosed in a bay, it is completely exposed to the Aegean winds. The August Etesian winds sweep across it mercilessly. The view spans half the horizon, with the island of Skyros sitting right in the middle. Behind it, the mountains of central Evia rise steeply

Mourteri covers the northern two-thirds of the beach’s length, and Agios Merkourios the southern third. The two are separated by rocky outcrops that stretch about 100 meters along the coast. You can cross either by climbing or squeezing through the rocks. A road runs the full length of the beach. It’s paved near the northern part and turns to dirt toward the south.

Just north of the Mourteri settlement, the beach and road are also divided by the outflow of the Nileas Stream (named after the river in northern Evia). The nearest bridge for vehicle access to the more remote northern section is 3 km from the village, near the chapel of Agios Georgios.

North of Mourteri lies the long and equally beautiful beach of Agios Georgios. Southward are the small hidden beaches of Kefalas, Bournias, and Aili. Near Mourteri, you’ll also find historic villages like Avlonari and Monodryo, and the monasteries of Mantzari and Agios Charalambos. Higher up in the mountains, it’s well worth visiting the paradisal Manikiatis Waterfall.
How to Get There
From Athens, head toward Kymi (either via the Chalkida bridge, the Oropos-Eretria ferry, or the Rafina-Marmari ferry). About 17 km before Kymi, at the entrance to the village of Orio, turn right and follow the signs to Mourteri. See the route.

There is one taverna in Mourteri, called Kyma. Villa Vagelis serves pizzas, sandwiches, and similar fare. You can also grab food at the beach bar Bourboulithres and at Elenara’s Canteen in Agios Merkourios.
