After three days of introduction to Uruguay in Montevideo, it was time to move on. Our next stop? La Paloma—a laid-back holiday town 227 kilometers west along the Uruguayan coast.

We booked a 6 am bus with a company called Cot from this website—tickets came out to about €15 each. Not bad. The early start meant dragging ourselves out of bed at an ungodly hour. After a quick cup of coffee, we called an Uber and left our accommodation in the old town of Montevideo. Despite the pre-dawn darkness, the bus terminal at Tres Cruces (located here) was buzzing—shops open, lights blazing, sleepy travelers clutching coffee and pastries.
The bus’s final destination was La Pedrera, a smaller town just beyond La Paloma. The ride was a moody, rain-soaked journey through the Uruguayan countryside. The rain barely let up the whole way. Outside the fogged-up windows, we watched as farmland stretched into low, scrubby hills and open fields peppered with grazing cattle. Here and there, clusters of eucalyptus trees blurred past, and every so often, we’d pass a tiny village that looked like it hadn’t changed in decades.
With several stops, it took us around 5 hours to reach La Paloma. We had to wait a little longer at the station for the rain to subside. And then, before it picks up again, we made a beeline for the little house where we’d spend the next couple of weeks in this cute, breezy littoral town.
