Megali Ammos Beach (meaning big sand), also known as Golden Sand, lies on the western coast of South Evia, 2.5 km south of Marmari. It’s primarily famous for its strong and consistent winds, making it a world-renowned hotspot for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

The label “big” in its name doesn’t come from its length (a modest 250 meters), but from its width. Its unique shape resembles a tongue stretching out to lick the sea. At times, its width exceeds 100 meters. I say “at times” because currents and winds constantly reshape it. If someone were to film a months-long aerial time-lapse, it would genuinely look like a dog licking a bone.

Megali Ammos is indeed very sandy, especially by Evia’s standards. The sand is of medium grain, with very few pebbles. The sea is crystal clear and fairly deep, with a sandy seabed as well.

The beach is located directly across from Chersonisi, the second largest islet in the Petalioi complex. The coast of this islet is just one kilometer away—an easy swim for experienced swimmers. Those with boats or a paddleboard can explore the entire enchanting cluster. South of Megali Ammos, the equally stunning beaches of Zastani and Lykorema await.
The view from Megali Ammos is captivating. Dotted with the Petalioi islets, it looks out over the mouth of the South Euboean Gulf as it opens to the vast Aegean Sea. Behind the beach rise the rugged, dry mountains of South Evia. And directly opposite, the sun paints emotional sunsets each evening as it dips behind Mount Hymettus.

Megali Ammos Beach has no facilities apart from a single beach bar with a few tables and sunbeds. As such, it’s not a typical choice for casual beachgoers. As mentioned, it’s mainly a hangout for Greek and other European wind and kite surfers. Winds blow steadily every day throughout the summer, and during the August Etesian winds, they can exceed 50 miles per hour. There is a kite surfing school and rental shop in Marmari.

In the wider area, it’s definitely worth visiting Karystos and hiking up Mount Ochi, known for its dragon houses and waterfalls.
