The journey from Machachi to Chimborazo Volcano follows part of Ecuador’s Avenue of the Volcanoes, crossing high Andean valleys, farmland, and open páramo landscapes. As the road heads south, the scenery gradually becomes more rugged before reaching the entrance to the Chimborazo Faunal Production Reserve, home to Ecuador’s highest mountain. Along the route, travelers pass broad mountain vistas and small settlements, while stops such as El Arenal provide a convenient break before continuing into the high-altitude reserve.
These photographs were taken during our drive from Machachi to Chimborazo, where we planned to attempt the mountain during our journey through Ecuador. Along the way, I clicked several photographs of the changing landscapes before having lunch at El Arenal near the entrance to the reserve. The gallery follows the route from our departure in Machachi to the first views of Chimborazo, documenting the approach before the climb began.
