Machachi is a small town in Ecuador’s Mejía Canton, situated south of Quito in a broad inter-Andean valley surrounded by some of the country’s best-known volcanoes. Its location makes it a popular base for exploring the Ecuadorian Andes, with easy access to mountain trails, national parks, and high-altitude landscapes. Despite its proximity to the capital, Machachi retains the relaxed atmosphere of a provincial town, where everyday life unfolds at a slower pace against a backdrop of dramatic peaks.
We spent about two weeks in Machachi altogether, making it the place where we stayed the longest during our journey through Ecuador. It became our base for hiking in the surrounding Andes, while also giving us time to enjoy the town’s calm rhythm between mountain trips. The photographs reflect both sides of that experience, combining quiet scenes from daily life in Machachi with moments before and after our excursions into the highlands.
