Ostia (often called Lido di Ostia) is a town on the Tyrrhenian coast, near the Italian capital. It does belong to the commune of Rome and it is the city’s only seaside district. Maintaining a population of 85.000 inhabitants, it forms Italy’s most populated ‘frazione’ administrative unit. It is known from the antiquity as it functioned as ancient Rome’s port, which nowadays is an archeological site of major importance. The city today serves mostly as a beach resort where many Romans spend their summer holidays.
Having been roaming on bicycles around the hot and hilly Italian hinterland for the past few weeks, that late-night we arrived in Rome, we were in urgent need of a beach as well. We cycled straight down for some 30 km separating the Italian capital from the sea and, by dawn time, we’d wound up at Lido di Ostia. I am placing in this album the few pictures I took during the chilling beach day that had just started.
