A Village Between Mountain and Sea
Lichada lies about 150 km northwest of Chalkida, at an elevation of around 150 metres on the slopes of Mount Lichas. From the village, the views stretch across the Oreoi Strait, the North Euboean Gulf, and the Maliakos Gulf. On clear days, you can even make out Arkitsa, Agios Konstantinos, and much of the opposite coast of mainland Greece.
The village has a long history, with evidence of continuous habitation in the wider area since the Neolithic period. According to Greek mythology, both the village and nearby Lichadonisia take their name from Lichas, the servant of Heracles. Today, Lichada remains a small settlement where agriculture, fishing, and seasonal tourism continue to shape local life.
A walk through the village reveals narrow streets, traditional houses, and the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, which stands at its centre. The surrounding plane trees and quiet squares make it a pleasant place to slow down before continuing towards the coast.
Agios Georgios Lichadas
About 3 km downhill from Lichada lies Agios Georgios Lichadas, the village’s small fishing harbour and seaside settlement. Colourful fishing boats line the waterfront, while fish tavernas overlook the calm waters of the strait. It’s an enjoyable place to stroll along the harbour or stop for a meal.
Agios Georgios is also one of the main departure points for boat trips to the Lichadonisia islands. During the summer months, excursion boats make the short crossing throughout the day.
Things to Do Around Lichada
The area’s best-known attraction is undoubtedly the Lichadonisia, a small volcanic archipelago just offshore, known for their clear turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and lush vegetation. During the summer, regular excursion boats cross from Agios Georgios and Kavos, often including a short cruise around the islands, the remains of a WWII shipwreck, and the chance to spot Mediterranean monk seals or dolphins before stopping for swimming on Monolia, the largest island.
Just beyond Agios Georgios is Kavos Beach, another of northern Evia’s most popular destinations. Its shallow waters and views towards the islands make it a favourite summer stop.
If you’re interested in hiking, you can climb to the chapel of Prophet Elias on Mount Lichas, which offers sweeping views over northern Evia and the opposite mainland. The peninsula also hides several quieter beaches, including Vasilina, as well as one of Greece’s historic lighthouses, built in 1892.
How to Get to Lichada
Lichada is about 30 km from Loutra Edipsou, 45 km from Istiaia, and 150 km from Chalkida. From Edipsos, simply follow the road towards Istiaia before turning left at the signed junction for Lichada. The road continues through the village of Gialtra before descending to Agios Georgios and Kavos at the end of the peninsula.
