Las Lajas Sanctuary is one of Colombia’s most famous religious sites, built dramatically across a canyon above the Guáitara River near Ipiales. The neo-Gothic church, connected by a tall stone bridge, attracts pilgrims and visitors from across the region, especially during Easter. Its setting between steep cliffs and waterfalls gives the sanctuary an unusual appearance that changes noticeably between daylight and night illumination.
We visited Las Lajas on Easter Sunday afternoon in April 2026. The sanctuary and surrounding paths were exceptionally crowded, with people gathering across the bridge and throughout the canyon. We stayed there until late evening to photograph both the daytime atmosphere and the church illuminated after dark as the crowds slowly shifted through the site.
