History of Istiaia
Istiaia has a long and storied history, dating back to ancient Greece. Archaeological findings from 2000 BCE, between Istiaia and Oreoi, indicate the existence of Middle Helladic settlements. It was mentioned in Homer’s Iliad for its rich vineyards, described as “polystaphylos” (abundant in grapes), and played a role in the Trojan War under the leadership of Chalkodontiades Elephenor, king of the Abantes.
In the 5th century BCE, settlers from Istiaia founded the colony of Stenimachos in Eastern Rumelia. Following the Battle of Artemisium, the town suffered severe destruction at the hands of Xerxes’ forces, who briefly occupied it. Later, under Athenian influence in the Delian League, Istiaia experienced a period of relative peace.
However, in 446 BCE, the town revolted against Athenian rule, likely driven by the economic oppression of the Athenian alliance and the aspirations of pro-Spartan oligarchs. Pericles swiftly retaliated, expelling Istiaia’s residents to Thessaly and Macedonia, redistributing their lands among 1,000 to 2,000 Athenian cleruchs (colonists), and renaming the city Oreoi. After the Peloponnesian War, Sparta took control, expelling the Athenian settlers and restoring the town’s original name. Many descendants of the exiled residents returned.
In the post-Classical era, the ancient city of Istiaia was located about two kilometers west of its present site, near the foothills of Mount Telethrio and the river Callas (Xerias). The modern town began forming before Ottoman rule (1470), initially recorded in 1474 under the name “Xirochori.” By the 17th century, travel accounts mention Istiaia under this name. Before the Greek Revolution, northern Evia was under the dominion of Ali Pasha until his assassination in January 1822.
Istiaia was among the first places in northern Evia to rise against Ottoman rule, with the uprising beginning on May 8, 1821. The town officially became part of the modern Greek state in March 1833. In the 20th century, it became the most significant urban center of northern Evia, with residents actively participating in the Macedonian Struggle. Today, Istiaia preserves its rich historical legacy while serving as a vital economic and cultural hub of the region.
