Ipiales lies in southern Colombia near the Ecuadorian border and serves as one of the country’s main transit points between the two nations. Set at high altitude in the Andes, the city combines busy commercial streets with a strong religious identity tied closely to nearby Las Lajas Sanctuary. During Easter, processions and celebrations spread through the streets and churches, giving the city a particularly active atmosphere.
We stayed in Ipiales for two nights in April 2026 at the end of our three-month journey through Colombia, just before crossing into Ecuador. Easter celebrations filled the city with religious processions and gatherings throughout our stay. We spent time walking through the center, photographing the streets, churches, and crowds moving through the city during the holiday.
