Ibarra is a city in northern Ecuador, set in the Andean highlands of Imbabura Province, north of Quito. Known as the “White City” for its historic whitewashed architecture, it sits near lakes, volcanoes, and rural villages that shape the region’s strong local character. The city has a compact center with churches, plazas, markets, and colonial-era streets that make it a natural stop for travelers exploring the northern Andes.
We visited Ibarra for a day while staying for a few nights in the nearby village of Esperanza. We walked quite extensively around town, stopping to photograph several landmarks along with everyday street scenes. The visit gave the photographs a mix of civic detail and ordinary movement, gathered during a steady walk through the city.
