Guatapé Reservoir, also known as Embalse Peñol-Guatapé, is a vast artificial lake in Antioquia, Colombia, created in the late 20th century as part of a hydroelectric project. Its branching shape forms a network of islands, coves, and peninsulas that define the landscape around Guatapé. The reservoir plays a key role in regional energy production while also supporting tourism, with activities such as boating, kayaking, and lakeside viewpoints offering broad perspectives over the water and surrounding hills.
We explored it on a kayaking trip during our weeklong stay in Guatapé on a sunny morning. We paddled across the water and moved between open stretches and quieter inlets, stopping at a few points to take in the views. We found several good vantage spots along the way and paused often to look back toward the shoreline. We also flew our drone and captured wide panoramas, following the lines of the water as it spread out around us.
