The Camino Real from Guane to Villanueva continues the historic network of stone paths that cross the Santander countryside in Colombia. Less frequented than the Barichara–Guane stretch, this section runs through open, sun-exposed terrain with long views toward the dramatic Chicamocha Canyon. The trail is defined by uneven stone paving, dry vegetation, and wide horizons, with only occasional signs of rural activity along the way. Its quieter character and expansive scenery give this segment a more remote, contemplative feel compared to other parts of the Camino Real.
We set out from Guane in the early afternoon and followed the trail as the second leg of our day hike from Barichara. The heat was strong, and the path felt noticeably quieter than the morning stretch. We kept a steady pace and reached Villanueva in about two hours, stopping at points to take in the views stretching out toward the Chicamocha Canyon.
