Gamboa Nature Reserve lies in the Peruvian Amazon region of Loreto, across the river from Leticia. This protected area is part of a vast network of rainforest ecosystems characterized by flooded forests, river channels, and rich wildlife habitats. Access is typically by boat, and travel often involves navigating both open river and narrow jungle waterways. The reserve reflects the remote and immersive nature of Amazon exploration.
We reached the reserve by canoe from Leticia, crossing the Amazon and moving deeper into the jungle. We hiked, or rather waded, through dense terrain before continuing by canoe to Piranha Lake, where we stayed in a floating hut. In the afternoon, we traveled to Cayman Lake, swam, fished for piranhas, and watched a fiery sunset. On the way back at night, we spotted a boa and a cayman, then cruised the next morning again before returning to Leticia.
