Fort Copacabana (Forte de Copacabana) is a historic military base at the southern end of Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Built in 1914, the fort was designed to protect the city’s coastline and features thick stone walls and powerful artillery guns that still stand today. One of its most recognizable features is the dome-shaped turrets that once housed long-range cannons. Today, the fort serves as a cultural and historical site, home to the Army Historical Museum, which showcases Brazil’s military past. Beyond its history, Fort Copacabana offers some of the best panoramic views of the famous beach and Sugarloaf Mountain.

We visited the Fort of Copacabana during our first stay in Rio in January 2025, before returning a month and a half later to experience its renowned Carnival. When we showed up in the late afternoon, a long queue had formed before the picturesque white arch with crenelated towers marking the entrance (location). It took 15 minutes to reach the ticket booth, where we were granted admission for 10 reais per person.
You can also purchase tickets in advance, or book a guided tour of the fort including hotel pick-up.
We then walked along a charming cobbled promenade, in the shade of verdant trees, between the coast and elegant old houses. Outdoor tables of two café-restaurants—Confeitaria Colombo and Café 18 do Forte—lined the waterfront. The view of the world’s most famous beach—crowded with bathers and bordered by upscale condos and lush hills—was fantastic.
The museum is housed inside the turret bunkers at the end of the promontory. The exhibits included rifles, old artillery pieces, uniforms, and photographs depicting the fort’s role in defending Rio de Janeiro. Interactive displays allowed visitors to explore the inner workings of the bunkers, including the original control rooms where operators managed the turret guns. Additionally, there were audio-visual presentations that narrated the fort’s history, giving a deeper understanding of its military significance.
Inconsiderately, the museum’s management has neglected to add information boards in English. Have your translator app ready if you don’t know Portuguese.
Fort Copacabana was built between 1908 and 1914 as part of Brazil’s coastal defense system, designed to protect Rio de Janeiro from potential naval attacks. Constructed with thick reinforced concrete and equipped with two massive Krupp cannons—each capable of firing over 20 kilometers—the fort was one of the most advanced military structures of its time. Strategically positioned at the southern tip of Copacabana Beach, it played a key role in defending Guanabara Bay.
One of the most significant events in the fort’s history occurred in 1922, during the Tenente Revolt, when a group of rebellious officers seized the fort in an attempt to challenge Brazil’s government. The uprising, known as the “18 of the Copacabana Fort”, ended with most of the rebels being killed or captured after marching down Avenida Atlântica under heavy fire. Over time, as military threats diminished, the fort lost its defensive purpose and was eventually transformed into a historical site.
The area atop the turrets was also accessible. From there, a marvelous view of the rocky coast, the secluded Praia do Forte behind the promontory, and the distant oceanic horizon unfolded.
