For many years, Egypt has been a dream destination for travellers across the globe – I should know, it’s been on my bucket list for ages. Known for its many cultural and architectural treasures, it’s a no-brainer.
Beyond the pyramids, stunning sculptures and intriguing souks, Egypt also offers plenty of options to relax. Here I look into some of the country’s most popular resorts, and why we think you should go there next.
Sharm El-Sheikh
The resort town of Sharm El-Sheikh is probably at the top of most people’s list of luxury destinations in Egypt. Nestled between the Sinai Peninsula and the clear Red Sea, it’s best known for its beautiful beaches and subaquatic gems, so pack a snorkel and get into the water. The coral reefs here are unparalleled by most other diving destinations in the world. Ras Muhammad National Park is particularly worth visiting and includes both stunning reefs and breathtaking shipwrecks.
Hurghada
Hurghada is a beach resort town that has all the ingredients necessary to create an unforgettable family, solo or couple’s holiday. The town stretches across approximately 40 km of Red Sea coastline. Along the way, you’ll find numerous diving schools and shops to purchase scuba diving equipment, or rental equipment for various other sea-based activities. The new part of the town offers plenty to do and see, including restaurants, bars, and even night clubs. El Dahar, the old town, has souks and traditional Egyptian coffee shops if you’re looking for a more authentic experience.
El Gouna
The resort town of El Gouna is newer than most in Egypt. Construction of its shoreline hotels and small islets began in the late 1980s, so it’s fairly modern. El Gouna is renowned for its beautiful lagoons, soft sandy beaches, and stunning coral reefs. You’ll also find the popular Mangroovy Beach here, a firm favourite amongst locals and tourists alike. This resort town offers plenty of lovely restaurants, bars, shops, and cafes, so is perfect for either a day trip or extended stay.
Marsa Alam
If for no other reason, you’ll want to visit Marsa Alam for the many dugongs (sea cows) and sea turtles found in the waters here. These exotic creatures are often spotted paddling in this part of the Red Sea, so it’s definitely one to consider for animal lovers. You can also go kite-surfing on El Naaba Lagoon, which is conveniently separated from the wider ocean by a beautiful coral reef. South of the main town you’ll find the Wadi el-Gemal National Park, where you can see more animals and wild areas that are just breathtaking.
Cairo
Cairo deserves an honourable mention here, even if it’s hardly a resort town. Egypt’s capital is a busy city with more streets and buildings than beaches and reefs. With that said, you’ll also find several popular spas and luxury hotels in the capital. Cairo is also the cultural epicentre of Egypt, and you’ll have close access to the famed pyramids here. You’ll also get to see the impressive Cairo Tower, an emblematic building located in a city steeped in history.
A variety of resorts from luxurious to budget-friendly
Egypt offers an extensive selection of resorts to visit, ranging from exclusive to backpacker-friendly. Best of all, each of these bucket-list resort towns will spoil you with stunning beaches, clear waters, and plenty to see and do. Wherever you go, do as I do and stay curious.
