El Peñón de Guatapé is a massive granite monolith rising about 220 meters above the landscape near the town of Guatapé in Antioquia, Colombia. Formed millions of years ago, it stands as one of the region’s most recognizable natural landmarks, with a staircase of over 700 steps built into a cleft along its side leading to the summit. From the top, the surrounding reservoir appears as a wide network of islands and peninsulas, making it a popular viewpoint for visitors exploring this part of the country.
We visited on a cloudy morning during our weeklong stay in Guatapé and walked out at dawn, passing quiet stretches of road with views opening up along the way. We reached the base early and were the first to climb to the top that day, moving steadily up the stairs. After coming back down, we flew our drone from a couple of spots facing the rock and watched how it stood against the muted sky.
