Comuna 13 is a hillside district in Medellín, Colombia, known for its dense urban layout, outdoor escalators, and vibrant street art that covers walls and stairways. Once marked by periods of conflict, the area has undergone significant social and cultural transformation, becoming a symbol of resilience and community-led change. Today, it draws visitors for its layered views over the city, its bold visual identity, and the constant movement along its interconnected paths.
We visited on a morning outing during our weeklong stay in Medellín in February 2026, and walked from the bottom to the top. We moved through narrow streets and stairways, surrounded by color and activity at every turn. I kept noticing the place’s pace, with people, music, and movement shaping the atmosphere. The energy stayed constant as we climbed, and we spent time at the top before heading back down.
