Chimborazo Volcano is Ecuador’s highest mountain, rising to 6,263 metres in the central Andes. Its summit is often noted as the farthest point from Earth’s centre because of the planet’s equatorial bulge. The volcano stands within the Chimborazo Faunal Production Reserve, where high páramo, volcanic slopes, refuges, and glacier routes define one of Ecuador’s major mountaineering landscapes.
We made an attempt to summit Chimborazo during our trip through Ecuador, starting our hike the previous day from Refugio Carrel and camping at high camp before the overnight climb. We reached around 5,800 metres, but bad weather forced us to climb entirely through snow and eventually turn back. The photographs document the route from Refugio Carrel to high camp, the camp itself, and the harsh conditions higher on the volcano.
