Backpacking Iraq on a shoestring in 2021, I set out with my partner to explore a country better known for war than tourism. We crossed the border with little planning and lots of curiosity—meeting generous Kurds, camping on remote mountains, dodging army checkpoints, wandering Baghdad, and reckoning with the ruins of Babylon and Mosul.
