From Barichara to Bucaramanga by Bus

After a few memorable days in Barichara—wandering its stone streets, settling into a slow rhythm, and hiking the Camino Real—we packed up and turned our attention north, toward Bucaramanga. There is a direct bus between the two, but it leaves painfully early in the morning. We preferred not to rush, so we chose the more flexible route with a connection in San Gil.

We left our lovely guesthouse in the early afternoon and walked to Calle 7, near its junction with Carrera 6, where the frequent buses to San Gil pass through (📍bus stop). Within minutes, we were on one. The ticket cost 8,000 COP, and the ride took around 30–40 minutes, descending steadily through green hills toward the busier valley below.

In San Gil, we got off at the smaller terminalito and took a taxi straight to the main long-distance terminal across the river (📍terminal location). The ride was short and cost 6,900 COP. Timing worked in our favor: almost as soon as we arrived, we found a bus to Bucaramanga boarding. This leg was more expensive—35,000 COP—but also far more dramatic.

Soon after we left the town, the road began carving its way down into the Chicamocha Canyon. The views were genuinely impressive: steep cliffs, deep folds in the land, sudden shifts from dry terrain to lush patches, and long stretches where the landscape felt almost cinematic. There was a brief food stop along the way, enough time to stretch our legs and grab something quick. Closer to Bucaramanga, traffic became chaotic, a sharp contrast to the calm of the canyon, and a clear sign we were approaching a major city.

The whole journey from San Gil took about four hours. We rolled into Bucaramanga in the late afternoon, tired but satisfied, and went straight to pick up our rented off-road motorbike. Tomorrow, we’d be back on the road—this time riding through the Chicamocha Canyon and up onto the Los Santos plateau.
