Sparta, the legendary city of ancient warriors, is reachable from Athens exclusively by road—there is currently no train service available. The only practical way to get there is by intercity bus. Below, you’ll find all the information you need to plan your bus trip, although you can also book a comfortable and affordable private transfer here if you prefer. While a day trip is technically possible if you catch an early morning bus and return late, a guided tour is usually a more efficient and insightful way to visit if you’re short on time.

Buses to Sparta depart from the Kifissos Bus Terminal in Athens (location). The most convenient way to get to Kifissos is by taking the blue metro line to Elaionas Station, then either walking approximately 1.5 kilometers or transferring to bus 052. Several other city buses also serve the terminal, including X93 from Athens Airport.
The journey to Sparta typically takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes, depending on the route and number of stops along the way. A one-way ticket costs €21 and can be purchased at the station or online via the bus company’s official website (search for Sparti with an “i”). Unlike most other Greek bus companies, this one doesn’t currently offer discounted return fares online. All buses drop off at the Sparta Bus Terminal (location), which is within walking distance of the town center.
At the time of writing (June 2025), seven buses run daily (including weekends) at 06:30, 08:15, 10:30, 13:30, 15:00, 17:15, and 20:00. Look here for updated schedules.
