Athens to Kalamata Bus
Buses from Athens run frequently to Kalamata, the main transport hub of the southern Peloponnese. Trains no longer operate on this route, so the bus is the only public transport option. Services depart from the Kifissos Bus Terminal in Athens (📍map), which you can reach by taking Metro Line 3 to Elaionas and then either walking about 1.5 km or transferring to bus 052. The X93 airport bus also stops at the terminal.
There are multiple daily departures to Kalamata, with travel times ranging between roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes and just over 3 hours, depending on the route. Tickets are bought at the station or online via the official KTEL website, and all buses arrive at the Kalamata intercity bus terminal, a short walk from the center.

Kalamata to Pylos by Bus
From Kalamata, you continue to Pylos on a regional bus operated by Messenia KTEL. The journey takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs €5.50. Tickets can be purchased directly at the Kalamata bus station or online when the booking system is functioning.
Some services continue beyond Pylos toward Methoni and Finikounta, so Pylos may appear as an intermediate stop rather than the final destination.
