Mycenae, the famed center of the ancient Mycenaean civilization and home of Agamemnon, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece. You can reach it from Athens by public transport, though it’s not the most straightforward trip. Several buses every day stop at Fichti, a small village 2 km away from the ruins. From there, you can walk or take a taxi to the site.
Below, you will find detailed information on how to carry out the bus trip. While it’s doable to visit as a day trip on your own, it’s often wiser to join an organized tour instead. You’ll travel more comfortably, see more places in one day, and likely pay just a little more overall.

Buses to Mycenae depart from the Kifissos Intercity Bus Terminal in Athens (location). The most convenient way to reach Kifissos Bus Terminal is by taking the blue metro line (Line 3) to Elaionas Station. From there, you can either walk around 15 minutes or hop on bus 052. You can also get to the terminal via other city buses, including the X93, which runs directly from Athens Airport.
You will have to catch a bus to Nafplio, all of which make a stop at Fichti (bus stop location), a roadside village 2 km from Mycenae. Keep your GPS on and let the driver know in advance that you’re getting off there. From Fichti, you can reach the site either on foot or by taxi (they are usually stationed on the spot in high season). The ride from Athens takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, and the one-way ticket costs €11.80 (or €22.00 for a return trip). You can purchase your ticket at the station or book it online through the official site of the bus company (choose “Fichti (mikines)” as your destination).
