Swakopmund was founded on the coast of Namibia by the Germans in 1892, to serve as the main harbour of the then colony of German South-West Africa. Today it is the fourth largest city in Namibia and a popular holiday resort for Germans and others, as well as the only serious presence of human civilization within the vast area occupied by the appalling Namib Desert.
