Astana, officially renamed Nur-Sultan in 2019, is the capital of Kazakhstan and a striking symbol of the country’s rapid modernization. Located in the windswept steppe, the city is known for its futuristic skyline, featuring avant-garde architecture that contrasts sharply with the vast flatlands around it. Major landmarks include the Bayterek Tower, offering panoramic views, and the Khan Shatyr, a massive tent-shaped shopping and entertainment center. As a planned city, Astana has grown rapidly since becoming the capital in 1997, transforming from a small provincial town into a modern political and economic hub. The city’s architecture and design reflect Kazakhstan’s ambition to position itself as a forward-looking and globally connected nation.
