A collection of pictures I took in Ilakaka, Madagascar. Browse hundreds of more photo albums from my trips around the world using the submenu above or the Photo Albums Map at the bottom of the page.
Ilakaka gained prominence in the late 1990s following the discovery of significant sapphire deposits, transforming it into a bustling mining town in southern Madagascar. The sapphire rush in Ilakaka attracted thousands of miners and traders, leading to rapid development and socio-economic changes in the region. While primarily known for its gemstone industry, Ilakaka offers insights into the dynamics of artisanal mining, trade, and the associated challenges and opportunities shaping local communities and landscapes.
