Ardittos Hill (also Ardittou) is a small forested hill that borders the western side of the Panathenaic Stadium in the center of Athens, Greece. It reaches a maximum elevation of 235 meters and features multiple paved paths and dirt trails one can use to have a pleasant stroll in the relieving shade of the pine trees that cover its slopes. Unlike other hills of central Athens, such as Lycabettus or Philopappos, Ardittos Hill is far from being a popular tourist spot; it’s very improbable you will see anyone there other than a few strollers and joggers from the adjoining neighborhoods. From its top and numerous openings throughout its territory, one can enjoy some of the best views of central Athens.
Etymology & History
Ardttou Hill owes its name to an ancient hero of Athens called Ardittis. According to mythology, that was a dude who, on this hill, reconciled the Athenians on an oath.
In antiquity, Ardittos Hill was a part of the deme of Agrae. It was at the foot of this hill where the ancient Athenian judges, in Aridttis’ honor, were taking their oath of justice in the name of Zeus, Apollo, and Demeter. Also, on the spot were held the so-called Minor Mysteries of Eleusis.
In Roman times, the benefactor of Athens Herodes Atticus, after having established the original Panathenaic Stadium, erected on the top of the hill a temple dedicated to goddess Tyche (Luck) featuring a gold-ivory statue of her. Remnants of the temple are still discernible today.
Herodes Atticus himself was buried on the top of the hill after his death. His grave was fenced by the city authorities during the first modern Olympic Games of 1896.
Access & Activities
Ardittos Hill is located right beside the Panathenaic Stadium. It’s easily accessible on foot by Syntagma or Evanngelismos metro stations. There are two main entrances to the park: one right beside the stadium’s entrance, and one at its backside. These, for some reason, are oftentimes closed. You should feel free to jump over the gates if this is the case during your visit. You may also access it by the upper west seats of the stadium if you go inside; just by hopping over the outer wall.
There isn’t much else you can do in Ardittos Hill besides enjoying a quiet walk and the magnificent views from its various viewpoints. Aside from the Panathenaic Stadium lying right at the hill’s foot, you will also get some lovely views of the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, and other notable sights of Athens. The angles are guaranteed to be among the least photographed.
