Unlike other waterfalls on Siquijor Island – such as Cambugahay, Kawasan, and Lugnason Falls – at Cangbangag Falls, it is unlikely that you will encounter any tourist crowds. It lacks the blue waters and spacious pools of the other waterfalls, it has, however, a charm of its own.
Cangbangag Falls is situated deep in a remote rainforest, high up on the mountains in the heart of Siquijor. It is the tallest waterfall in Sijuijor, its drop measuring more than 30 meters. A small pool forms at its foot, a little blurry but clean enough to have a refreshing dip. There are also a few rocks from which one can jump in the central, deeper part of the pool.
The best thing about this waterfall is its remoteness and ‘unpopularity’. On whatever day and hour you decide to visit, it is more likely you will have this little paradise all to yourselves.
We decided to visit Cangbangag Falls on a sunny afternoon. The place is accessible from 1) the village of Cang-Apa, along the road linking Luyang with Tigbawa, or 2) the road from Larena to Maria. The latter was our case as we started from Larena.
We left the main road in Basac Village, right beside the basketball court (junction coordinates: 9.2196, 123.6145). This is the road leading to Cang-Apa. About 2 km after Basac, you reach a fork junction. Right goes to Cang-Apa, left goes to Cangbangag Falls. There is a sign directing you there. You drive for about 2 more km until you cannot drive anymore. You continue on foot.
It was a beautiful hike through pristine rainforest. We got to wonder at various peculiar plants, birds, and insects. The trail, towards the end, gets a pretty steep inclination down. It took us some 15 minutes and it should take no more than 30.
En route we encountered a group of four Australian girls and their local guide, with whom we reached the waterfall at the same time. They only had a quick dip and headed back straight away. We then had the place all to ourselves to enjoy a refreshing swim and the serenity of the forest in complete quietude.
