Camping at Tiwi Village Beach – Oman Road Trip Pt. 5

So we left the Bimmah Sinkhole and headed further south to Tiwi Village where we were intent on camping for the night at the beach.

Soon afterwards we were entering Tiwi from the south coastal road. Right before the village, we drove past the mouth of Wadi Tiwi. A stretch of highway spanned the wide estuary upheld by an array of soaring pillars. Staring at the obscure interior of the canyon under the overcast eventide sky excited the very depths of my soul.

The nightfall was imminent by the time we parked the Hyundai in the centre of the village. We still had some remaining daylight for a stroll around. I found Tiwi a pretty picturesque coastal village. That air of wistful decadence associated with a random remote location where numberless generations of humans have lived and died was prevalent all around the village.

New stylish villas stood beside debris heaps of erstwhile houses. Little kids were capering merrily about the streets and elder men sat in circles by the side of the road playing some sort of card game. Women, just like everywhere else in Oman, were confined at home: not to be seen anywhere by public eyes.

We had our dinner at one of the few accumulated in the same place restaurants and set off in search of a camping spot. We had a look at the beach to the south of Tiwi. It was a nice sandy one by the mouth of Wadi Tiwi that would have made for a nice camping spot. Though it was pretty windy and there wasn’t much of a cover to be found.

We checked out the beach to the north as well. We found a nice sheltered spot beside a cliff at the southern end of the beach; up on a platform, having a great view of the ocean on the one side and the entrance of Wadi Shab on the other. Camping there also gave the advantage of not needing to drive in the morning, but head straight into the canyon.
