So on that sunny morning, the second day of my road trip in Oman, I left As Sifah Beach for Bandar Al Khayran Beach.
After a short drive, there I was. I drove past the minimal Al Khayran village and made a stop by the shore of Al Khayran’s innermost bay, to which the road osculates. This is a very pretty shallow bay with an island amidst it which reminds me more of a swamp. A couple of small fishing stations are set up on the coast and fishing boats rested idly in the bay.
I took the small road by the eastern end of the bay that led me, after a km or so, to a parking space overlooking the eastern bay of Al Khayran. I parked the car, packed some essentials (sunscreen, swimming glasses, e-book…), and inspected the various beaches from above. It was Friday. Most of those beaches were already occupied by other campers, and a pretty large number of yachts were moored around the bay.
I was in quite an introverted mood this morning and felt more like finding a private beach for myself. I followed a trail leading east from the parking space which eventually led me down to the shore. A few beaches and bluff scrambles later, I wound up to a fine, little, deprived-of-people beach: my beach for the day.
I spent there quite a few hours which would make for a highly precise definition of what a ‘pleasant day’ is. I spent these hours alternately between the beach and the sea; reading and sunbathing at the former; swimming and snorkeling in the latter.
The bay was abundant with life, pellucid, and especially shallow all over, so that it made for good snorkeling. I saw mollusks and crustaceans aplenty. Various fish kept gliding past me in bullet-fashion, while some of them engaged in showy perpendicular somersaults out of the water. Some smaller ones didn’t hesitate to come and munch tiny stuff off my body.
Then it became afternoon. I packed and went for a nice short hike along the rocky coastline and up the lofty hills. The views of the elevated, whitish, little islands, the azure bay waters, and the deep blue ocean in the background were unique and spectacular: a highlight of my trip in Oman.
Eventually, I ended up back at the parking space by late afternoon and drove back to Muscat. I had been invited to a barbecue/karaoke party at a friend’s place. There I also was to meet my Dutch friend Max who would join me tomorrow for the continuation of this road trip to new exotic lands and epical adventures.
