Sabato River is located in Campania, Southern Italy. It originates from Monte Terminio in the Picentini Mountains Range and runs for about 50 km through the provinces of Avellino and Benevento.
Its name is often confusedly attributed to the the identical modern Italian word for Saturday. But in fact, the name preceeds Christianity and the import of the Hebrew word for Saturday (Sabath-Sabato) in the Italian peninsula. In reality, it comes from an ancient tribe inhabiting the area, known as the Sabatini, after whom the Romans named the river ‘Sabatus’.
I happened to pass by the Sabato River’s valley while on a trekking trip in the Picentini Mountains. It was during an exceptional summer draught. I hadn’t managed to find a single drop since I approached the range. So I came all the way from high up the mountains to the river bed in hope of finding water. But for my bad luck, I found the river utterly dry, too. Nevertheless, I camped for one night by the riverbank, before heading further down to civilization in search of some water. You will see in this album a few pictures I took during the time I spent in this remote and wild spot of Campania.
