Fano is a city located on the Adriatic coast in the region of Marche in Italy. It is the third-largest by population city in the region after Ancona and Pesaro. Its foundation dates back to an unknown time, the first mention of it occurring in Caesar’s time, in 49 BC, as Fanum Fortunae. It later functioned as the capital of the Byzantine Pentapolis including all the major ports of the region. Today it is mostly known as a beach resort where Italian and other Europeans stream from the north to enjoy its boundless, sandy beach and the waters of the Adriatic. I happened to pass through this city on an extremely hot noonday when cycling northwards along the Adriatic coast. You will see in this photo album a few pictures I captured while passing through the city of Fano.
