It was a tranquil early morning we left the village of Belvedere Ostrense and started cycling towards the Adriatic coast. The first part of the ride was an easy one, letting gravity convey us down the lofty hill on whose top Belvedere Ostrense is situated while enjoying the view of the succeeding, undulating hills expanding to the distance. Then, the second part was a rather toilsome one, pedalling up the other, immediately following lofty hill. On top of that hill it was we encountered the town of Ostra and took these few pictures you see in this post. Ostra used to be a thriving town in antiquity until it finally got abandoned in the 6th century AD. A new town was later founded on the top of that hill which was initially named Montalboddo, until it readopted its ancient name in 1881. Today, one may there wonder at the massive medieval fortification encircling the town and the picturesque, reminiscent-of-long-past-ages buildings enclosed in the citadel, while relishing the astounding views of the surrounding hilly landscape.
